I arrived at the orphanage Thursday morning to find a ladder propped against the coconut tree. Jhonny, one of the men who takes care of the yard, began climbing the very tall ladder while Charles held onto it to steady him. When he reached the top of the ladder, Jhonny began yanking the dead palm branches out of the tree. When he couldn't reach any more, he wrapped his legs around the trunk and began scaling higher. When he got to the top, he started twisting coconuts until they came loose, and then they would fall to the ground with a thud. He had a way of doing it so that they fell on our side of the wall. It was incredible to watch. When he finished with all the ripe coconuts, he slid all the way down the trunck with a coconut held firmly in his teeth. Charles chopped one of them open, and we drank the water. Later when I saw Jhonny, I couldn't help but look at him with a new admiration.
