Samantha: A Continuation

I've had two mission teams and an adoptive family bonding trip in the last three weeks.  At the end of the second mission team, they went out to do a quick tour of the city.  I asked Jackson to stop by the cathedral to check on Samantha and Monica.  I sent some formula that I had at the apartment and a little body lotion for her.  On Monday Marie France said something had happened to Samantha, and on Wednesday morning Pierre told me someone had tried to kidnap baby Monica.  We were on our way out for a quick city tour with the adoptive families, and I asked Pierre if I could stop and talk to Samantha, and bring her back to the orphanage to see how we can help her.   He agreed, and I quickly filled the families about our soon to be extra passenger.
We arrived at the Cathedral and as I glanced around, I didn't see her.  My heart fell.  A young man approached, and I asked for Samantha.  He pointed to a place outside the cathedral, on the opposite
side from where I was standing.  A young woman began to lead me back to where he was pointing.  Samantha heard them calling for her, and when she saw me, she came running and we had one of those giant hugs of people so thankful to see each other.  She took me around to the back, to an outer courtyard where there were many interesting looking people.  I wasn't afraid, just a little out of my comfort zone.  The smell of dirty bodies and garbage filled my nose as we got closer to where another young woman was bathing Monica in a 5 gallon bucket.  She bounced her chubby legs, dancing, when she saw me.  I told Samantha I had heard what happened, and asked if she wanted to come back to Maison so we could talk about what she needs.  She agreed, and quickly set about getting herself ready to go.  Her hair was partially braided, so she grabbed her friend's stocking cap and plunked it on her head.  Monica was covered in powder and put in her best little outfit.
When Pierre and I sat down on the front porch to talk with Samantha, this is what she shared with us:
About ten days earlier, on a Saturday night around 9 pm, Samantha and Monica had fallen asleep in the tent of a friend.  Samantha woke up to someone snatching Monica away and running.  Samantha started screaming for help and running after the men.  They had managed to grab another baby, and as they ran down the street towards a 'private car', others joined in the chase after hearing screams for help.  When someone got close to the man running with Monica, he dropped her on the ground and kept running.  Eventually the other baby was put down as well.  Having seen the car the men were running towards, Samantha knew that if they had taken her daughter, she would have been offered as a sacrifice.  She is afraid of them coming back, because the same thing happened to other babies in the area, and some of them were found after the sacrifice had taken place.  Samantha now sleeps with a rope tied around Monica's leg to her own arm or leg.
We had the same conversation we've had several times before: what do you want for your child?  Do you want to find a place to live with Monica and Michelson (who currently lives at Zanfan Lakay boys house)?  Do you need a place for your baby to stay while you find a safer place to live?
I don't know what I'm supposed to do to help her, I just know that I'm supposed to give her options, and follow through on what I offer.
She told us she wants us to keep Monica safe, and to possibly give her for adoption.  She wants her to be safe and healthy and well-cared for.  But then she said she wants to take her back home with her to have her baptized.  She wants to do that first, but she doesn't have money (you have to pay the priest to have your baby baptized in the Catholic church here).  I offered to baptize Monica right then.  She kind of laughed nervously, and said ok.  I could tell this was not her first choice.  I asked Pierre to tell her, "I respect that you are Monica's mother.  I'm concerned about her safety where you are staying right now.  I will do what I can to help you."
She said she was going to take Monica back home and have her baptized when she got some money, and then bring her back.  I asked if she had a dress for her sweet baby girl.  She said no, so Marie France went and found something nice for her to wear.
Before Pierre left to take her home, we talked for a few minutes.  I simply do not understand how it must feel to tie your baby to your leg, hoping she'll still be there in the morning.  I don't understand what it feels like to have no other options, or to feel like there are no options.  I also don't understand taking a child back into that situation.
I know there is a huge push right now to fix the problems facing poverty-stricken women.  So many people are all about providing skills-training so that the women can keep their children.  I am all for those programs and organizations.  Suddenly, it seems everyone is looking down on orphanages.  I understand they are not ideal.  I know there is much to be desired for children in orphanages.  I know it's not how God designed for children to be raised.  But I also know that God didn't design ropes for moms to tie their children to them so they aren't stolen.  Our Creator God abhors the sacrifice of children.  Oh how His heart must grieve when these kidnappers are successful.
So is it best for Monica to stay in an orphanage for awhile while Samantha finds a job and safer place to live?  Is it best to stay in the tent with her mom on the street?
I don't have answers to this tonight.  I probably won't have them tomorrow.  All I can say is, oh Jesus, come quickly.

Thanks for sharing about these needs. Those of us here have no idea what it's like to be a mom in Haiti.
